What Does Waxing Moon Mean?

The term "waxing" refers to the period during which the visible portion of the moon’s illuminated surface increases. Following the new moon—when the moon is completely obscured from view—the waxing phase begins. This gradual increase is divided into specific stages:

1. Waxing Crescent: Following the new moon, the moon begins to show a sliver of light, appearing like a crescent.
2. First Quarter: Here, the moon is half-illuminated; we see a clear division of light and shadow.
3. Waxing Gibbous: The moon becomes more illuminated as it approaches the full moon, appearing almost completely round.
